Why join UNIFI?

UNIFI is Europe's largest specialist finance sector trade union, with 160,000 members in over 400 employers. UNIFI is a member of the TUC, the Scottish TUC, the Welsh TUC and Union Net-work International, but does not affiliate to any political party. UNIFI's stated ambition is to:-
  • end divided staff representation in the finance sector
  • become the major trade union in the finance sector
  • provide the most effective service within properly managed resources
  • extend and grow membership
  • ensure our relevance to all finance sector workers.
So why join UNIFI? Well here are some questions and comments from non-members who are now members.

"I don't need to join, I get the benefits anyway."

Where we represent members in a group it's true that all workers in that group benefit from our professional negotiations, but consider how much better those negotiations could be if we represented all the staff. This is only one aspect of membership though; you cannot get the benefits of our representation, legal services, education programmes or other services if you not a member at the time you need them.

"I don't believe in trade unions."

Trade unions can suffer from an out of date image, but UNIFI is a modern trade union with 65% of its membership being women and the majority of working members under the age of 40. It would be your union and you could change it through the democratic structure. On the other hand you can pay your subscription, call it an insurance premium, or peace of mind fund, and simply call us when you need us.

"I don't believe in or want to go on strike."

It is highly unlikely that you will ever be balloted on industrial action, but if you are it's your choice. Strikes only occur when the members decide it is the right thing to do. Our negotiations rarely get to the stage where strike action is the only option left.

"I can handle it myself, I don't need a union."

You wouldn't believe the number of senior managers who have said this and then 'phoned up for help when it is too late. There are very few people who go through their working life without needing some third-party help or advice. How would you feel if you had the opportunity to join, did nothing and are now facing the sack, demotion or redundancy?

"I can't afford to join."

You can't afford not to. We do not have a magic wand, and cannot stop members from losing their jobs in every circumstance, but we can make sure that the procedures are applied fairly and that all alternative routes are explored. And we may be able to save you the cost of your subscriptions if you use some of the other services that we provide. It costs less than a tenner a month, less than a fiver for part-time workers.

"I'll only join when I need to."

You need to now! You work in a sector that is changing so fast who knows what is around the corner? Your section/branch/unit may be closed relocated or taken over. It may not be all bad news though, your workplace may be expanding and you want to take advantage of new opportunities. We can help you.
